       FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What services do you provide?
We provide a comprehensive, entirely online set of training courses that include plans, and code knowledge materials and instruction specifically geared toward the DSA exams.

What does the DSA exam entail?
There are 4 DSA Certified inspector exams, and of those only three are really useful. Candidates are tested for their knowledge in codes plan reading. Each test is a multiple choice exam designed to test the candidates’ knowledge of codes and plan reading.

What is DSA ?
DSA (Division of the State Architect) is the California State regulatory body that is in charge of the construction of school buildings. They verify that the buildings comply with the state building standards (California Building Code), and they are also in charge of administering the inspection process. Therefore they control the process by which DSA inspectors are approved.

What is a DSA Certified inspector?
A DSA certified inspector is a person approved by DSA to carry out inspections on school building projects in the state of California within the limits of their certification.

Who do DSA inspectors work for?
DSA inspectors are hired by school districts throughout the state of California. They either work directly for the school district or for an entity that is hired by the school district.

Can DSA inspectors work independently?
Yes, as a matter of fact most DSA inspectors are hired as consultants to the school districts who are their clients.

How much does a DSA inspector make?
The DSA inspector’s fees are either negotiated with an employer or with a school district. However, to give you an idea, average pay rates for independent DSA inspectors in Southern California are between $35/hr and $50/hr.

How much experience do I need to be a DSA inspector?
This is a tricky question so stay with me. DSA requires (3) years of what the refer to as ‘qualifying experience’. This means that you must have three years of experience doing work that they consider useful to the DSA inspector. See the “Qualification Requirements” page on this web site for more information.

How do I get started?
First you should see if you do or if you are close to qualifying for taking the DSA exam. Print out and fill out the DSA application form. Getting to take the test is half the battle.

How long does it take to process my application?
The application usually takes about six weeks for processing. You should call about 2 weeks or so after you turn in your application
